A massive stampede at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people, while over 60 others sustained injuries, officials confirmed today. The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday as thousands of devotees gathered to take a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.
Cause of the Stampede
According to eyewitnesses, the stampede broke out when a large crowd surged towards the bathing ghats for the Shahi Snan (royal bath), a key ritual of the Kumbh Mela. Some pilgrims reportedly breached security barricades, leading to panic and chaos in the densely packed area.
Emergency responders struggled to navigate the overcrowded venue, delaying the rescue operation. “The sheer volume of people made it difficult to reach the victims quickly,” said a local police official. “By the time we got there, many had already been crushed under the weight of the crowd.”
Government Response and Condolences
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and assured that authorities would investigate the incident thoroughly. “Deeply pained by the loss of lives in the Kumbh Mela tragedy. My prayers are with the bereaved families. We are working closely with local officials to ensure medical aid and support,” he wrote on social media.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a high-level inquiry into the tragedy and has announced compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

Political Reactions and Safety Concerns
Opposition leaders have criticized the handling of the festival’s crowd management. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi blamed mismanagement and lack of proper planning for the disaster, stating, “The Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. The government should have ensured better security and organization.”
This tragic incident has raised questions about crowd control measures at large religious gatherings. Experts have urged authorities to implement better safety protocols, including controlled entry systems, designated exit routes, and real-time crowd monitoring using AI-driven technology.
Kumbh Mela Continues with Tightened Security
Despite the tragedy, the Maha Kumbh Mela—which is expected to draw over 100 million pilgrims—will continue as scheduled. Officials have tightened security, restricting entry to key areas, and deploying additional police personnel to prevent further mishaps.
As the world watches, the focus now shifts to preventing another catastrophe, ensuring that faith and devotion do not come at the cost of human lives.
